Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket & Boston (circa 2006)

Many years ago we took a trip back east. My Mom was from New England and I had always wanted to take a trip there. I haven’t been to her birthplace which is Maine, but it is on my Bucket List. I haven’t been to my Dad’s birthplace either which is Montana but we are planning a trip next year.

So, back to the East Coast. We took a ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard in our rental car and proceeded to find our VRBO rental. It was a cute little place with a funky bedroom at the top of a very tiny spiral staircase. We only slept up there the first night. It was something out of a nightmare to go down that staircase in the middle of the night. Plan B……the sofa sleeper.

The Harbor

The town of Oak Bluffs I think was my favorite on the island. It had quaint Gingerbread Houses that were a part of the 19th century religious camp. There is an antique carousel which was brought to the island in the 1880’s from New York City. It is the Flying Horse. The main street is Circuit Avenue and we happened upon a quaint and delicious restaurant. I had Deep Fried Clams (my fav) along with some Garlic Coleslaw. I have tried to copy that coleslaw for years, I guess we just have to go back.

Deep Fried Clams…..be still my heart.
Jon – Vineyard Haven……(be still my heart)

While we were in Martha’s Vineyard we realized that we would probably never be this close to Nantucket again so we checked out how much it would cost to go there for the day. It was reasonable and only a 15 minute flight. It turns out it was a 5 seater plane and it was foggy so we had to circle Nantucket for about 40 minutes. Oh well…..we landed safely (obviously) and had lunch and roamed about Nantucket for the day.

Adorable homes on the Nantucket dock

So everywhere we go there is a tradition. I may have mentioned this before in another post. Sometimes I will join in and when we travel with our kids, they sometimes join in, but JON……always takes part. Here are this trips Statue Pictures.

We traveled to the Vineyard (as the locals call it) and the end of May which encompassed Memorial Day. We crashed a picnic there. It was a slice of Americana.

There are 6 towns or areas of interest on the Island. Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, Chilmark, West Tisbury, Edgartown and Aquinnah. All very different, with a unique feel to them. The first thing that hit me when we were there is that it was very wooded. Lakes, Beaches, Fishing and I’ve never seen a destination as quaint as Martha’s Vineyard. It is a Charmer!

We topped off our trip with a day in Boston. I would like to go back there one day and spend more time. We visited some very old cemeteries with famous folk who are buried there. Paul Revere, Benjamin Franklin and many more.

We will be back New England…….I want my clams and coleslaw!
