Kerkyra, Corfu

Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. This is the port I was looking most forward to visiting. A friend of ours suggested we watch a show called “The Durrells in Corfu” when he found out we were going there. It is a British Comedy/Drama and we loved it. I couldn’t wait to go. I did my research of the island and found a taverna, Nikolas Traditional Taverna, that I even liked on Facebook. It just looked idyllic. https://agnibay.com/ I knew that was where we were going to go. Not so. Anyway, let me tell you how this all unfolded. We got off the ship and walked over to the Old Fortress. Just beautiful and views were outstanding.

A Beautiful Day in Corfu

We walked around the fortress and saw some tunnels and of course some more amazing views. It was quite a walk with a lot of steps and was strenuous at times, but well worth it.

Leaving the fortress we went over to the Old Town of Corfu. We decided we needed to plot the remainder of our day. We saw a taxi line and decided to ask how much it would cost to go to Agni Bay (Nikolas Taverna). I asked and he said “55 Euros.” “Wow,” I said, “that’s a lot. Where is the Bus Terminal?” He pointed. In my research I found that the bus was 3 Euros. We decided we needed to sit and have a latte and figure it out. I asked our waitress how long it would take to get to Agni Bay. She looked us over and said “Do you have the time? You are on the ship yes?” I said “Yes”. She replied “at least an hour and a half to get there and of course an hour and a half to get back.” Oh well… We decided we would spend our day in Old Corfu Town, shopping, eating and drinking, all of which we do rather well. We will be back Corfu and spend a week or two exploring you!

Shops and Restaurants

Farmers Market and a plaza where there are residences and restaurants.

The Durrells in Corfu, which I mentioned earlier, was filmed in Corfu. There is a store which has merchandise and information about the show and the books that Gerald Durrell wrote, the most famous one being “My Family and Other Animals”.

As we were walking around town, we saw many of the days normal sights and sounds. For example, delivery people trying to navigate through the very small alleys to bring an air conditioner to install or a family’s laundry hanging outside their home (Oh goody, Laundry, my favorite to photograph).

We stopped for lunch at this outdoor restaurant that was so typically Greek and in a great spot to watch the people go by. We shared a Greek salad. Jon had Sofrito and I had Grilled Octopus (Shocker!) At the restaurant they had a dog that was so sweet and adorable. His name was Oskar and of course I had to take some pictures of him.

There was an adorable Candy Shop that we just had to go into. It was called Hans and Gretel.

So in closing I leave you with my favorite picture that I took in Corfu. It was not taken on our fancy camera it was taken with my iphone. I feel it captures a typical residence of old Greece with new transportation. That juxtaposition of old and new.

Corfu……we will return.
