James by Percival Everett
Summary: A brilliant, action-packed reimagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, both harrowing and darkly humorous, told from the enslaved Jim’s point of view. So vivid and colorful you can almost hear the Mississippi River.
Menu:
Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes and Gravy – made by Jon Robinson (I was still recuperating from a total hip replacement.)
Corn Bread Muffins – made by Jeanine
Tossed Green Salad – made by JoAnne
Apple Pie – made by Lynne.
So as you can see, we had a Southern spread in my back yard.
We all enjoyed the book and it really did give you a different perspective on the time and place. Jim carefully performs the role expected of him by white society while finding his own covert ways to resist. It is only near the end of the novel that Jim directly reveals himself to be Huck’s biological father, but small hints appear in earlier chapters.
