Pawns, Queens, Kings and End Game by Barry Brynjulson
This book and author came recommended by our book club member Lynne Dourgarian. Her sister-in-law performs at senior living homes in the bay area. Her name is Shirley. She met Barry one day and got to talking. He told her about his book and then she told Lynne that maybe our club would like to read it. We did…..and Barry, the author was kind enough to come to our meeting for an informative Q and A session.
The book is about two gentlemen in a Retirement community that begin an evening $1 tuck-in service, complete with guitars and serenading. Pawns, Queens, Kings….the Endgame follows these two men and four other residents as they look for their own versions of purpose, esteem, and companionship. Not all is fun and shenanigans as the realities of aging appear. This bitter-sweet narrative tenderly explores the needs and wants of the aged, as well as their desire to die with dignity.
We decided to have a Tea Luncheon for this day. I made egg salad tea sandwiches, Dee Dee made Roast Beef and Pickle Roll ups. We also had a fruit platter from Jo, Pin wheels from Robyn and Chicken sandwiches from Jeanine. Lynne made a fabulous Lemon surprise dessert. Jeanine also commissioned some beautiful cookies to be made by our friend Karen. Barry joined us for lunch and we ate and discussed his book simultaneously.

Recipes we used were in this link. Enjoy!
This picture of Barry and Debbie is that of a character in the book that Debbie is portraying. Diane, is always wearing three hats…..a little quirky, like me.
Our Club: from Left to Right – Me (Debbie), Dee Dee, Joanne, Lynne, Barry, Babs and seated Jeanine and Robyn.
A final note…. this was Dee Dee’s last club meeting with us. She has moved to New Mexico with her husband to start their journey to retirement. We wish them the best and will miss them. Much love to you both.
