Books N Cooks #15

The Fifteenth Book that we read was The Glorious Guiness Girls. The author is Emily Hourican. This was another Galley Match from The Book Club Cookbook. Thank you Judy Gelman.

Taken from the Amazon review:

Descendants of the founder of the Guinness beer empire, they were the toast of 1920s high society, darlings of the press, with not a care in the world. But Felicity knows better. Sent to live with them as a child because her mother could no longer care for her, she grows up as the sisters’ companion. Both an outsider and a part of the family, she witnesses the complex lives upstairs and downstairs, sees the compromises and sacrifices beneath the glamorous surface. Then, at a party one summer’s evening, something happens that sends shock waves through the entire household. Inspired by a remarkable true story and fascinating real events, The Glorious Guinness Girls is an unforgettable novel about the haves and have-nots, one that will make you ask if where you find yourself is where you truly belong.

We all enjoyed this book and some of us identified with Aileen and Oonagh and a few of us related to Felicity or “Fliss” and one felt a kinship to Maureen. Now Maureen dances to the beat of her own drummer and is wild and free spirited. As always our conversations end up in uproarious laughter and I’m pretty sure we talked about sex……

The menu for this luncheon was all things Irish.

We had Chantilly’s….which is Guiness Beer mixed with 7-Up.

We had three types of Tea Sandwiches. They were Roast Beef and Watercress, Cucumber, and Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese. For appetizers we had Guinness Cheese Pretzel Bites and Deviled Eggs. Dessert was a Guinness Cake Loaf and Baileys Brownies. The recipes are below:

For some unknown reason the link to the Cucumber tea sandwiches and the Roast Beef and Horseradish sandwiches is not responding. If you would like to check out the recipes go to www.ohhowcivilized.com

Our next book is Sobremesa by Josephine Caminos Oria. This is a fabulous book and our food will be Argentinian. I can’t wait.

Stay safe and read a book.
