West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge
This story will help you understand what it means to be changed by the grace of animals, the kindness of strangers, the passing of time, and a story told before it’s too late. Woody is the book’s narrator and has a great affinity for animals. It is inspired by a true story and it is quite the adventure. There is a road trip from New York to San Diego with two giraffes, stowaways, circuses, romance, shocking truths, sacrifice and tragedy. Amidst all this, the giraffes themselves represented peace. The book’s themes embrace hope, resilience, love and the importance of remembrance and storytelling. It offers a lot more that I ever imagined it would. You could say it has “all the feels”.
One of our members is a teacher and she did a presentation complete with graphs and pictures and with Flair! It was really very interesting and we learned more about their journey from her research. Thank you Barb.

The Onion theme was because that was what the Giraffes ate. During the depression that was a cheap vegetable to purchase so he kept them in bags in the truck.
Note the Giraffe plates and napkins……A……dorable. We’re pretty cute too.
