Malta

Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean, between Sicily and North Africa. It is a nation known for its historic sites related to a succession of rulers, including the Romans, Moors, Knights of St. John, French and British. What a breathtaking sight pulling into port here. The only way I can describe it was Biblical. I’ve never experienced anything like it before.

We took a ferry to the shore and walked along a promenade to the Barrakka Lift which takes you up to the top where the Gardens and Valletta City are.

Cannons at the top

Once at the top of the Gardens, we saw so much beauty. The Gardens, birds and vistas of the island.

When we reached the top we started to walk within the walls of Valletta City. We came to a huge square. We saw the very large and stately office of the Prime Minister, a statue of Manwel Dimech, a beautiful tree, and a quaint bench for two.

Prime Minister’s office

Manwel Dimech was a Maltese socialist, philosopher, journalist, writer, poet and social revolutionary. Born in Valletta and brought up in extreme poverty and illiteracy, Dimech spent significant portions of his early life in the Maltese prison system, mostly on charges of petty theft.
I have no clue as to what type of tree this is other than it is beautiful.

We kept walking and actually backtracked our way to another entrance to the city. There was a beautiful fountain that was under construction, just imagine how pretty it would be if the water was actually flowing! We saw more glory of the city’s yesteryears, just amazing!

Right inside the wall.

Alleys…

There are so many alleys here that have shops, restaurants and views…….oh the views. Here are some samples.

Just beautiful

Signs, Signs, everywhere the Signs…

Here is a montage for you of the comical, and true signs…..Enjoy

The F is Silent……cracked us up!

St. John’s Co-Cathedral

St. John’s is a Roman Catholic Co-Cathedral in Valletta. It is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. It was built by the order of St. John between 1572 and 1577. There are paintings there from Michelango Merisi who is better known as Caravaggio. The most famous ones are The Beheading of St. John the Baptist and Saint Jerome Writing.

The Crypt

Before we went back to the ship we decided to have a bite to eat. I had heard that Brown’s kitchen was quite good and had good views of the water. We finally found them and had some Sangria with lunch. A very LARGE ship had just pulled in and that was our view but no matter, nothing was going to ruin this day.

Sangria

We have friends with whom we have done theatre that are from Malta – The Rapas. We also have a friend, Dee Dee, that sang with them when they went home to perform a concert on the island. Now I know what all the “hubbub” was about. It is a magical place and we can’t wait to go back again.
