Brighton, England

When we lived in England we discovered a coastal town called Brighton and just loved it. It was only an hour train ride away from where we lived and it always gave me a rejuvenated lift as only the ocean can. Whenever we had friends from the States come to visit we would take them to Brighton. The one exception was our daughter Nikki, who said when asked “Where would you like to go when you are in London?” She replied “Paris!”……..but I digress……

Brighton is a town situated on the southern coast of England, in the county of East Sussex. It is best known as a seaside resort and is positioned 47 miles south of London. It has a pier with amusement rides, an arcade, a casino plus shops and restuarants. There used to be a West Pier but it was destroyed by fire in 2003. The remains were still there when we last visited in 2012.

King George’s Summer Palace…….Per Wikipedia:

The Prince of Wales, who later became George IV, first visited Brighton in 1783, at the age of 21. The seaside town had become fashionable as a result of the residence of George’s uncle, Prince Henry, Duke of Cumberland, whose tastes for fine cuisine, gambling, the theatre, and general fast living the young prince shared, and with whom he lodged in Brighton at Grove House. In addition, the Prince of Wales was advised by his physician that the seawater and fresh air would be beneficial for his gout. In 1786, under a financial cloud with investigation by Parliament for the extravagances incurred in building Carlton House, London, the Prince rented a modest, erstwhile farmhouse facing the Old Steine, a grassy area of Brighton used as a promenade by visitors.

Oh yeah, deep fried anything by the seaside…..fabulous.

So as you can see it is a beautiful get away and a fun place to go. Warning: Summers on the weekend are very crowded. I’d go anytime I could go, it’s worth it.
